Sound Healing

Sound healing is an ancient practice that harnesses the power of sound vibrations to promote healing and relaxation.

Sound can bring balance, relaxation and a sense of wholeness to the body. The sound of harmonic vibrations created by singing bowls, gongs and other overtone-emitting instruments are intended to stimulate the alpha and theta brain waves. These waves are associated with deep meditative and peaceful states that help us to connect deeply within. Sound can also slow down the heart and respiratory rate, creating a therapeutic effect on the mind and body.*

Sometimes during a formal meditation practice where we are guided to focus on the breath for example, it can be challenging for the mind to settle. People often find that with a Sound Bath the mind settles far more quickly. A sound bath is an opportunity to explore what a meditative state is and how it feels.

At Present Moment, sound is drawn upon and folded into different classes and practices. But also, each month, a skilled and experienced Sound Therapist visits the space here to offer a Sound Bath.

What is a sound Bath?

Just to be clear, no water is actually involved in a sound bath!

Most often, participants in a Sound Bath will be lying on a yoga mat in a warm and soothing space. Supporting the body’s comfort is essential, so each person will have the option of using a yoga bolster, an eye pillow, a warm soft blanket and cushion, and anything else that they might find comforting as the body and mind eases into a relaxed state.

All then that is required is to “bathe” in the sounds and let them wash over you.

Some people fall asleep which is perfectly ok. Particularly if you are someone who has difficulty with sleep and rest. The sounds are still working in a very powerful way to soothe and bring healing to your mind and body.

Following a Sound Bath, it is important to be gentle with yourself. Drink lots of water, and respond with care to however you might be feeling. For example, you might feel your body would like more rest, so go with this. Of course you might feel the exact opposite, and feel very energised and inspired. So ride this wave too! Or perhaps you might feel that your emotions are more heightened. However you are, be gentle with what is arising.
