Book Review | The Dalai Lama’s Cat by David Michie

This is a novel, a story told by a beautiful Himalayan cat, saved from the slums of New Delhi when she is adopted by the Dalai Lama and lives in his Tibetan sanctuary.

The cat, our author, has many names. She is called “The Most Beautiful Creature Who Ever Lived” by Mrs Trinci, his holiness’s cook. One of the monks names her Rinpoche which means precious while the Dalai Lama calls her the Snow Lion. Mostly she is know simply as HHC, His Holiness’s Cat.

This short book is a wonderful journey told by HHC of her experience in the presence of the Dalai Lama where she witnesses his insights into our nature and the key to our internal well being. She learns a thing or two about her own nature along the way. “It is not so much the circumstances of our lives that make us happy or unhappy but the way we see them” for example.

This is a beautifully written book about kindness and love delivered without preaching. If you want to learn or be reminded of how Buddhism and enlightenment can help us cope in the 21st century then I think you will enjoy it. It might even change your life.
